2022 Grant Recipients

Elizabeth Reyes

My major is Global Supply Chain Management. I enjoy spending time in the Tanner building for different activities. I am an event coordinator for the Women in Supply Chain organization at BYU. My hobbies are reading mystery books and playing board games. My favorite things are my family and animals! I served a mission in Idaho, Idaho Falls during 2016-2018.

Derek Baker

I was born in Southern California, but I was raised in Houston, Texas. I grew up playing all kinds of sports, but my favorite was baseball. I played shortstop throughout my high school years.

After graduating, I served a full-time mission in Edmonton, Canada where I learned to love the snow and long winters despite living in very hot places my entire life. Most importantly, I learned to love and rely on Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. My time on my mission taught me many things, most importantly how to serve and lift those around me.

I came to BYU after finishing my mission because I wanted to gain an education that would allow me to continue to help others throughout my life. With my interests and inherent talents, I was drawn to the Marriott School’s finance program. I have worked with startups since I started at BYU, and in 2021 I even started my own software company, Cashboard. With my co-founder, we built a tool that integrates with finance and accounting tools to create automated metrics dashboards and financial models. The startup ultimately didn't succeed, but Clientbook, one of our early customers, hired me as their full-time financial analyst. I'm excited to begin my career at a high-growth startup learning to manage the financial processes required to grow, scale, and fund a company. I recognize that these opportunities and achievements could not have been possible without the teaching, mentoring, and inspiration from my finance professors.

While at BYU, I met my wife, Madysen Ivey, who is also from Houston, TX. We had Marketing 201 together in Fall 2019, became friends, and then began dating in the beginning of 2020. We were married in the Summer of 2020 during the height of Covid. Of all the experiences BYU has given me, finding my wife has been the most important to me. We have been very grateful for our time at BYU and the education we have received as we begin our family together.

Sydney Jenks

This December I will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. I want to become a nurse because it allows me to provide holistic care. I love that as a nurse, I will have the opportunity to help heal people physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. After I graduate, I would like to work in Labor and Delivery, the Emergency Room, or the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit. I love rock climbing, running, and playing volleyball, but mostly I just love spending time with my friends. I also really enjoy traveling. I lived in Romania for a summer and volunteered in an orphanage there. I have visited Denmark, Sicily, England, Ireland, and Scotland. And a little over a month ago I returned from a study abroad in Ecuador for my nursing program.

Drake Allen

I’m a Senior Mechanical Engineering Student at BYU born and raised in Katy, Texas. I served a mission in Puebla, Mexico before starting college and have continued to find ways to stay involved in the hispanic culture through Spanish classes and humanitarian trips to Central and South America. Two main things about me are I love the outdoors, and I love to travel. I recently took a 15-day trip to Nepal to backpack the Everest Base Camp trail. One of my favorite pastimes is getting outside and rock climbing the Utah mountains whenever possible. I also have a secret obsession with making sour dough.

In Engineering I hope to go into product development from either a manufacturing or design side and work hands on with hard or soft goods. I’d love to stay involved with the outdoor industry but it’s a difficult one to get into so I keep seeking ways to distinguish myself through experience!
